Basically, with two beautiful leading ladies, a happy ending, and an uplifting message, you can’t go wrong.Īn Enlightenment Productions film, I Can’t Think Straight was produced, directed and financed almost entirely by women. Plus, Sarif doesn’t skimp on the intimate scenes, which adds a refreshing element of depth, authenticity, and of course, hotness. Despite the inclusion of heavy themes, I Can’t Think Straight maintains a lighthearted and sexy tone, perfect for a date, an evening with friends, or a night home alone. The message about being true to oneself comes through loud and clear, but isn’t overbearing. You might feel as if your brain has turned to mush, or you have ‘brain fog‘. These issues are handled gracefully, with feminist overtones. The film explores theology, expectations of women in different cultures, and the difficulty and importance of coming out. Tala eventually realizes what she wants in life, but to win Leyla back she has to learn to be honest with herself and those close to her. Leyla takes a different path, breaking up with Ali and coming out to her parents. A turn of events causes her to have an affair and subsequently fall in love with another woman, Leyla, a British Indian. Sadly, they part ways–Tala returns to Jordan, where her all-about-appearances socialite mother is still planning her wedding. I Cant Think Straight is a 2007 romance movie about a London-based Jordanian of Palestinian descent, Tala, who is preparing for an elaborate wedding. They confess their feelings for each other, but Tala believes that pursuing a lesbian relationship wouldn’t be acceptable in her country. How’s that for diversity? Though Tala is engaged and Leyla is dating Ali, Tala’s best friend, their immediate connection is undeniable and fun to watch. Opposites attract when Tala (Lisa Ray), a feisty Christian Jordanian based in London, meets Leyla (Sheetal Sheth), a shy British Muslim Indian. But "I Can't Think Straight," while a comedy, is frank about cultural tensions among Palestinians and Jews, Christians and Muslims, and the intolerance of homosexuality in both Jordanian and Indian cultures (the women in love come from immigrant families).Writer/director Shamim Sarif’s I Can’t Think Straight carries the tagline “Just another British, Indian, Muslim, Arab, Christian, lesbian romantic comedy.” So while this film may be the first of its genre, it’s also definitely a lesbian must-see. The dramatic "World Unseen" depicts, as expected, a repressive situation in 1950s South Africa. Interestingly, it might be the romantic comedy that turns out to be the most controversial. Suddenly, Enlightenment Productions, the distributor, had two films for practically the price of one. At about the time that project was finished, Sarif regained the legal rights to her first film. While all that was playing out, Sarif was able to put together financing for an adaptation of her first novel, "The World Unseen" ("I Can't Think Straight" was her third novel), and she again went with Ray and Sheth. Most of the films I'm in (such as Deepa Mehta's "Water") are gloomy, so it was kind of fun to take on a light set." She meets Leyla, played by Sheetal Sheth, the first Indian-American actress to appear in Maxim. "Yeah, but it was a pretty fun set," Ray said by telephone. The absolutely gorgeous Indian actress Lisa Ray (Vancouver critics named her Best Actress for Water) plays Tala, an upper class Jordanian of Palestinian origin, whose family lives in London, and who is about to get married. Lack of sleep Poor sleep quality can interfere with how well your brain functions, according to 2021 research. However, the production couldn't cover all of its expenses, and Sarif and her producer had to go to court to get the negative back into their control. When your brain is exhausted, it becomes harder to think, reason, and focus. Turns out that "I Can't Think Straight," about a woman from a Jordanian family and one from an Indian family fall who in love, was made first and was Sarif's directorial debut. The aspect of collaboration appealed to me, using the amazing resources of people that are experts in their field, like production design, actors, etc." "Maybe it's the schizophrenic in me," laughs Sarif on the phone from London, speaking not only of her two films but also of her leap from novelist to filmmaker. I Cant Think Straight is a 2008 British romantic drama film directed by Shamim Sarif. It's not often one can see how the same director approaches two different subject matters - a present-day comedy and a period drama - in so short a time. Speed isn’t the only problem with reading on screens. It also won’t get you far if you’re preparing for a test on the periodic table. That’s not helpful if you’re trying to understand the themes in that classic book, To Kill a Mockingbird. Your brain might fire up the networks it uses for skimming quickly through TikTok posts. Imagine that you turn on your phone to read an assignment for school. That fast skimming, she says, can become a habit associated with reading on-screen. “Their eyes scan the pages and the words faster than if they’re reading on a piece of paper.”īut when reading fast, we may not absorb all the ideas as well. So, “when people read on-screen, they read faster,” says Alexander at the University of Maryland. Much of what we read on-screen tends to be text messages and social-media posts. If we think it will be easy, we might not put in much effort. She says one way mindset works is in anticipating how easy or hard we expect the reading to be. Baron is the author of How We Read Now, a new book about digital reading and learning. She works at American University in Washington, D.C. Baron is a scientist who studies language and reading. It also depends on what you assume about the text. ![]() That doesn’t just depend on the device, however. But when screens are small, the extra scrolling needed to read a long article or book may make it harder to retain what you’re reading, data now show. That’s fine for checking texts and social media posts. It may switch to deep-reading mode when you turn to print. Same original tool, two very different forms.Īs a result, the brain might slip into skim mode when you’re reading on a screen. This is like if you took a coat hanger and instead of straightening it out to fetch a blueberry, you twisted it into a hook to unclog a drain. It basically adapts the same tool again for the new task. When we read online, the brain creates a different set of connections between cells from the ones it uses for reading in print. But that flexibility can be a problem when it comes to reading different types of texts. It’s one reason we can learn to do so many new things. It’s great that the brain is so flexible. That’s what the brain does when you read. You’ve taken a tool made for one thing and adapted it for something new. But if a blueberry rolls under the refrigerator, you might straighten out the coat hanger and use it to reach under the fridge and pull out the fruit. For example, a coat hanger is great for putting your clothes in the closet. This is similar to how you might adapt a tool for some new use. For example, the part that evolved to recognize faces is called into action to recognize letters. To understand text, the brain borrows networks that evolved to do other things. Wolf notes it’s because the brain has no special network of cells just for reading. We learn to talk by listening to those around us. This neuroscientist specializes in how the brain reads. Maryanne Wolf works at the University of California, Los Angeles. When tested, though, it turns out that they actually learned less than when reading in print. Alexander says students often think they learn more from reading online. Much of her research has delved into the differences between reading in print and on-screen. Patricia Alexander is a psychologist at the University of Maryland in College Park. The researchers shared the results in Educational Research Review. Comprehension, they found, was better overall when people read print rather than digital texts. Their 2018 study involved more than 171,000 readers. For example, researchers in Spain and Israel took a close look at 54 studies comparing digital and print reading. Even worse, many don’t realize they’re not getting it. Many studies have shown that when people read on-screen, they don’t understand what they’ve read as well as when they read in print. Or at least that’s what a lot of research now suggests. But if you really need to learn something, you’re probably better off with print. Need a quick refresher on the phases of the moon? Go ahead, read a story online (or two or three). She's right, as is Louis in pointing to the author's "imagination" as the mysterious force that makes such improbabilities real. "We're no more improbable than the story of the two old cattle ranchers," she continues, referring to Haruf's "Plainsong" (1999). "He could write a book about us," Addie says to Louis. One might ask the same of Haruf and this novel it's no accident that Addie poses her questions within a brief, sly chapter in which she and Louis are discussing the never-named author who constantly writes about their town. And not all dried up in body and spirit." Muses one morning, "that it turns out we're not finished with changes and excitements. As in "Benediction," those new beginnings are underscored by the presence of a young child - here, Addie's 6-year-old grandson, who lives with her for the summer and takes a shine to Louis. Which also means that no matter how old we are, we always have the chance to begin anew. Instead there's the hard-won and often hard-to-accept knowledge that marriages often die because all of us change. There's no blame associated with such observations - not from them and not from Haruf, who is always empathetic toward his characters. What gradually becomes clear is that Addie and Louis evolved in ways their spouses did not. It's always two people bumping against each other blindly, acting out of old ideas and dreams and mistaken understandings." "Who does ever get what they want? It doesn't seem to happen to many of us if any at all. Hence statements like this one from Addie, as she and Louis each admit the various ways in which their long marriages disappointed both themselves and their respective spouses: This leads to remarkably candid conversations and confessions from two people who have seen too much - and are too close to the finish line - to continue lying to themselves or each other. Such pressures will result in an unsatisfying and improbable plot twist toward novel's end, leaving me wondering whether Haruf rounded his novel off before it was truly done.īut before getting there, Addie and Louis' refreshing refusal to worry about appearances extends to the way they approach their own deepening relationship. Like the 77-year-old Dad - like, perhaps, the dying Haruf - Addie and Louis have reached a point where they'd like to think they care less than they once did about how their behavior goes down within the small town where they live. Set in 2014 in Holt - the small, fictional town on the eastern Colorado plains where most of Haruf's stories unfold - "Our Souls at Night" reads like a coda to "Benediction," which revolves around Dad Lewis, the dying owner of a hardware store looking back over his life. The reason is likely so they could shoehorn in more references to give a greater incentive to come see the movie. The movie moved (no pun intended) at a lightning pace. The pacing of the movie also felt very quick. When the last act came around, Luigi’s reintroduction and very brief character arc felt very unnatural and only there because it had to be. Luigi is present for a decent amount in the first act of the film, but when he enters the Mushroom Kingdom in the second act, his character is taken out of the plot almost entirely. There didn’t seem to be a good character motive for Peach to assist Mario, and it didn’t feel fluid at all. Largely, for example, is how Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) invites Mario along almost instantly after meeting. ![]() Some plot beats didn’t seem fully fleshed out and felt very rushed. The plot of the film was all over the place. However, the rapid fire Easter eggs and references felt very forced and almost like a stand-in for any sense of actual plot. Around every corner, a secret reference could be spotted, inviting the viewer to pay a little more attention to the action on screen than they likely would normally. The sheer volume of Easter eggs and references to earlier and later Mario games was astounding. The games have always been in a very cartoony aesthetic that doesn’t require or call for a grand level of detail, but the movie went ahead and fleshed out the cutesy nature of the more recent games. The animation flows so smoothly, even with the incredible level of detail and depth that the world portrays. The back is padded for comfort and you’ll also need a padded strap for this 10-pounder We’ll discuss the playability in detail later, but suffice to say, the neck is arrow straight, action is low and the guitar plays perfectly.
